New Home on Pluto

New Home on Pluto

Easily access your personalized recommendations and pick up where you left off

My contributions: Upon joining, I validated existing Home designs with customers before launching our MVP. I optimized the launch row order and aligned stakeholders on key user flows based on user feedback. Home MVP was successfully rolled out on all devices.

Context

Pluto TV relied on an outdated linear cable-style streaming model, so we needed to modernize its passive "lean-back" experience to engage a new generation of users accustomed to on-demand streaming.

Problems

  1. Pluto lacked a system for users to discover relevant content tailored to their interests.

  1. Pluto TV has traditionally kept live and on-demand content separate, limiting user control and convenient access to different content types. As a result, Pluto TV users have lacked the ability to easily resume content they were previously watching.

Solution

“Home” was introduced as a central hub for Pluto users, providing them with curated recommendations for both live and on-demand content while enabling quick access to recently watched content.

Impact

  • Increased percentage of quality users from 23% to 28%+.

  • 2.2x watch actions.

  • 1.5x bookmark actions. Contributed to our retention metrics.

Rearranging the Row Order

Due to backend limitations, Home MVP launched with a fixed content row order, making user insights critical to improving the experience.  To understand user preferences, I conducted a card sorting exercise to identify how they would organize rows and the reasoning behind their choices..

Logic Behind the New Order

I optimized the MVP row order to allow for easier content discovery.

Bookmarking rows were prioritized near the top, ensuring quick access with minimal clicks.

Recommendation rows were restructured based on user insights—general recommendations ranked higher than specific ones due to skepticism around past viewing influencing suggestions.

Additionally, movie preferences shaped the hierarchy, with movies placed above TV series and channels while maintaining a balanced distribution of content categories.

To further enhance content discoverability, I introduced a dynamic badging system that provides users with relevant cues, such as “Unlock Free” and “Leaving Soon” This helped streamline decision-making and improve engagement across platforms.
